About California Polytechnic State University Mustangs

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is a public university in San Luis Obispo, California. It is one of two polytechnics in the California State System. Academics & Campus

Cal Poly has one of the largest campuses in the U.S., owning 9,178 acres. It is the second-largest land-holding university in the state, and the main campus not only offers student education but two agricultural lands and two properties, which include a ranch for research opportunities and much more.

The university is divided into six colleges that provide 65 bachelor's and 39 master's degrees. As of fall 2020, Cal Poly has 21,447 undergraduate and 840 graduate students. What is the Historyof California Polytechnic State University?

The school was established as the California Polytechnic School in 1901 after Governor Henry T. Gage signed the California Polytechnic School Bill. In 1960, control of Cal Poly and every other state college was transferred from the State Board of Education to an independent Board of Trustees, later known as the California State University System. The name was changed in 1971 to California Polytechnic State University following the steady enrollment growth.

What NCAA Sports do the Mustangs Play?

The athletic teams participate in the Big West Conference, except for the football and wrestling teams. The football team competes in the Big Sky Conference, whereas the wrestling team is a member of the Pac-12 Conference.

The Mustangs' athletics program includes the following:

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and wrestling.

California Polytechnic competed in the NCAA Tournament 141 times across 18 sports at the Division I FCS level. Go Mustangs!
